Plan Your Surf Trip

to Mentawai Islands

In a remote corner of the Indian Ocean, waves break with purpose and time slows down.

Here’s how to make the most of it.

Out beyond the Sumatran coast, the land breaks into a scatter of jungle-covered islands and sharp coral reefs. Boats bob in turquoise channels. Palms sway above white sand. The air smells of salt and wood smoke.

This is the Mentawai Islands - one of the last great sanctuaries of surfing.

For surfers, the Mentawais need no introduction. Swells roll in unbroken for thousands of kilometers. The reef setups are near perfect. The rhythm is as ancient as the tide. But this isn’t just about the surf. It’s about what happens in between - the early boat rides, the quiet dinners, the warm water that never asks for a wetsuit.

Stay at La Isla Mentawai, and the wild edges of this archipelago soften - just enough to breathe easy between sessions.

Why The Mentawais?

Because the waves are honest.

They don’t tease. They don’t hide. From April to October, southern swells arrive steady and strong, shaped by deep ocean and shallow reefs. You’ll find long walls, fast barrels, playful shoulders—and something for every kind of surfer, from charger to cruisy.

Because the ocean’s warm, always.

You won’t need layers. Just wax up, jump in, and paddle out. The water hovers around 28°C year-round. Every session feels like a swim and a workout and a ritual, all rolled into one.

Because everyone’s here for the same thing.

The Mentawai lineup has no room for tourists with selfie sticks. The crowd—if you can call it that—is made up of surfers who came to surf. It’s easy to connect, or to stay quiet and let the waves do the talking.

Because comfort matters, especially here.

After a day in the sun and salt, you want a place that doesn’t make you choose between style and substance. At La Isla, you get both—big beds, great food, clean water, and the space to unwind without distraction.

When to Come to Mentawai?

May to September is prime time.

The swells are bigger, more frequent, and more varied. Expect some size, some punch, and long rides that test your legs and your timing.

March to April, and October, offer a gentler pace.

The waves are still consistent, but a bit more forgiving—perfect for intermediate surfers or anyone dialing things in.

November to February is off-season, but not off-limits.

It’s quieter, with fewer boats and a slower vibe. You might score a swell window. You might not. But the sunsets still burn gold, and the water never stops calling.

How to get to Mentawai?

The Long Way That’s Worth it

The journey begins with a flight to Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) in Padang, West Sumatra. From there, La Isla takes over—organizing your boat transfer to Pulau Pototoga, the island they call home.

The boat ride cuts across open ocean. Sometimes it’s glassy, sometimes it’s a rollercoaster.

Either way, it’s the kind of ride that reminds you just how far from everything you’ve come.

What to bring?

  • A few boards, packed tight

  • A small kit of essentials (light clothing, reef booties, medical basics)

  • Leave the heavy gear behind—space is limited and the vibe is simple

What You’ll Need (Besides Boards)

  • Visa: Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival (30 days).

  • Insurance: Travel and surf insurance, especially surf coverage, it’s not optional out here.

  • Health: Bring a small first aid kit. Cuts happen. Stay surf-fit before you come; the waves don’t wait

La Isla is small on purpose. Just a few villas tucked into the green, close to the shore but hidden from sight. There’s no rush. No forced schedule.

The days are shaped by the swell, the tides, and your appetite.
